Letter from:

Josh Colvin  (Coach Mentor 2015)

In July of 2015, I was fortunate enough to be selected to attend the FinnGoalieNS mentor week program. Jack Hartigan was incredibly helpful in the months preceding lining up accommodations and insuring the logistics went smoothly. Jack and his staff were incredibly professional from the start and hosted an amazing five days of goaltending instructing, both on and off the ice. In addition to his staff, Jukka Ropponen from Goaliepro and Justin Goldman from The Goalie Guild were in attendance as instructors.

Both the on-ice and off-ice instruction was incredibly organized and well thought out in advance. The concepts taught built in a logical and sequential manner, with individualized instruction for each goalie regardless of ability. This was a great opportunity for me to observe how other instruction is handled with large numbers of goalies. At no point did it feel like a “factory” model churning out robotic goalies. The coaches took the time to get to know and interact with each goalie, focusing on areas they could improve their individual game. I was given free rein to float and work with the different instructors and pick their brains on what they were looking for, what the coaching points were, and more we continually had in-depth conversations about the intricacies of the position. There were coaches from Quebec, the United States (like myself), Nova Scotia, and Finland all sitting around constantly talking about goaltending in an open environment on sharing. This was a great change from the territorial, trade secret, mentality I have experienced in other settings. When I saw concepts I didn’t agree with, we had incredibly positive conversations about the pro’s and con’s. At no point did I field like anything but a respected peer, there to learn and share with other coaches.

I have incorporated many of the coaching methods into my own work this past season and look forward to attending this camp again as soon as my schedule allows. In closing, all coaches have access to drills. All coaches have access to youtube. What made this mentorship program so valuable was the ability to sit down and talk to experienced, intelligent coaches about what they see and think about the position, to talk to them one on one and expand my thoughts on the position and the process of coaching.
